The Artist

Synnöve Dickhoff

My name is Synnöve Dickhoff and I live and work in Helsinki, Finland.

My works are visual observations on the finiteness and brevity of human life. Their starting point being moments that influence the course of a life, events in time and their reflections in me. By emphasizing the sensitive and layered nature of the materials ¬fragile and powerful lines on paper and on textiles¬ I tell the story I wish to tell, in which often both light and shadows are meant to simultaneously coexist. Serialization, detail, and material combinations characterize my work. Through dyeing, burning, embroidering, darning, and binding paper and textiles I aim to evoke a strong presence of the unconscious, of memory and recollection. The painstakingly slow process intuitively, creatively dialogues with the work itself, and the combination and layering of different materials evokes randomness and unpredictability.

I received my MA from the University of Art and Design, Helsinki, in 1995. I’ve had several solo exhibitions in Finland and taken part in many group exhibitions, both locally and abroad. My work is featured in various collections such as The State Art Collections of Finland, the Artists’ Book collection at the Rikhardinkatu Library of Helsinki, the Jorvi Hospital, and several private collections. Some of the work featured on this website is available for purchase; if you wish to reach me please use the contact form below, thank you.
